What do you do when you were hired to do pretty generic coverage of a short daytime event and they ask you to throw in some headshots for their website? After hiding the fact that you don't have the ideal equipment on hand, you discuss usage and payment, and then find the cleanest solid background available near a window. I won't win an award for technical perfection, but for a single light source and one minute of notice, everybody ended up happy.
There are a couple basic types of headshots out there. On the one hand you have the super creative shots that an actor would use to stand out from the crowd. On the other hand you have the setups where you have 40 people to get shot and a very short window in which to shoot them. This was one of those "get 'em done" situations. I did an onsite set up in a restaurant to catch people during one of their few gatherings of the year. "Stand on the X, please. You're just a smile and a shutter click away from your hors d'oeuvres."
